Valentine (Felty) Husk

I have been working on my husband's Husk Family for quite a few years and I keep bumping into Valentine's Family line. So just on the chance they ever connect. I have been trying to keep a record of all info I collect from several different sources. I also get a lot of people asking me for the info I do have so I thought I would add it here for all to check it out. I want to THANK ALL of you who have helped add to this family file. PLEASE just remember that I haven't documented any of this info so it's just a way to help you out there to get started looking and doing your own checking for facts about the info.

Descendants of James Husk f/o Valentine (Felty) Husk

Notes for JAMES HUSK:

From: Janet Dryer: Dryer7171@aol.com

Hello all,

My John Hurst/Hust/Husk was the son of James Hurst/Hust/Husk.

This James is also the father of

Valentine Husk of Daviess County, Kentucky,

Absolum Hurst/Hust/Husk who was in the census with Valentine 1820 (they both were under Hurst) ,

William Hurst/Hust/Husk of Christian and Trigg County, Kentucky,

Nancy Hurst/Hust/Husk, and Isaac Hurst/Hust/Husk.

Isaac the youngest son was married in Ohio County, Kentucky and James gave consent he married Nancy Hacker.

Also

Valentine Husk who married Elizabeth Hocker/Hacker was first married to Nancy Moore in 1789 Greene County, TN. I have much info on the siblings of Valentine Husk if anyone is interested. Through DNA I have been able to trace them back to Stafford County, Virginia then to TN then to Kentucky. Just so happens these Hurst's were in the same parish as William Hacker was born. (Elizabeth's father). The family moved back and forth from Kentucky to TN for awhile then some stayed in TN, some Kentucky some went on to Arkansas and some to Missouri.

What I know about James Hurst/Hust/Husk (Probably born about 1740 Virginia)

James is in Montgomery County, VA 1782 tax list name appears as James Hust. 1780-1783 Flower Swift Militia Montgomery County, Virginia listed James Hust/Husk in 1782. James's son Absolum had two children that married Sailings. They were from Montgomery County, Virginia. So their grandfather and the Sailings grandfather were in the same place at the same time.

C. ceded west lands again and 1790 Greene County became part of Territory of the U. S. south of Ohio River. In 1795 Tennessee becomes a state and Greene County becomes Greene County, TN.

Valentine "Felty" Husk researchers

Janet Dryer: Dryer7171@aol.com

I have made great strides in researching my Hurst/Hust/Husk family. Let me start out by saying that in my family the name went to Husk at least as far as my g/g grandfather goes. He and his siblings went with the Husk name. Farther up the line the name has been spelled Hurst, Hust or Husk. My oldest known ancestor is John Hurst/Hust/Husk born about 1765 in Virginia died 1840 in Henderson County, Kentucky. My John moved to Henderson County, Kentucky about 1803 from Tennessee. He is in the 1810 census Henderson County, Kentucky as John Husk (indexed as Hush). I know this is him because his son in law William Strain is living next door. John's will dated October 1, 1840 lists his children from his first marriage and children from second marriage. He also mentions who all of his daughters married. From second marriage he had three sons 1. Absolum 2. Valentine "Felty" 3. George.

My Valentine "Felty" was born around 1820 and died in Henderson County, Kentucky 1845. I have a verbal will that lists his name as Valentine. In his dad's will he is mentioned as Felty. I also have other land records and things with his name as Felty. Both John and Valentine's wills list their last name as Hust. John put his mark on there so he may not have been able to read or write. Records for John have Hust or Husk on there. Records for his children have Hurst, Hust or Husk on there. I believe that my John may be a brother to Valentine Husk from Daviess County, Kentucky. I base this on him nameing a son Valentine "Felty" this name doesn't show up anywhere else in my family. Henderson County is right next to Daviess county.

Also Valentine Husk is listed in the 1820 census as Valentine Hurst. On the page before him there is a Absolum Hurst. This Absolum moved to Missouri by 1830 and he went with the Hust name. I believe this Absolum is also a brother to Valentine and my John. My John's descendants some went to Arkansas and went with the Hurst name. The ones that stayed in Henderson County, Kentucky went with the Hust spelling. My family went to Warrick County, Indiana and later Missouri and went with Husk. I did find a descendant of John's who is 83 and still living in Henderson County. He has told me that the name did start out as Hurst. He also passed down to me a family history of who John's family may be as far as him being a descendant of a "Red Head" Bill Hurst/Hust.

This week he agreed to give a DNA sample to participate in the Hurst/Hust/Husk Y-DNA project. We should get the results in 8 weeks. I am hoping that we fit into one of the Hurst families in the study. In order to participate you have to be a male with the last name of Hurst/Hust/Husk or any varient spelling. I would love to see a male descendant of Valentine "Felty" Husk of Daviess County, Kentucky with the last name Husk participate as well as a decendant of Absolum Hust of Ralls County, Missouri. A male descendant with the last name still Hust or Husk from these lines will share the same Y-DNA as there ancestor.

So if my therory is right and Valentine "Felty" Husk born Virginia died Daviess county, Kentucky, Absolum Hust born 1774 in Virginia, and my John born about 1765 in Virginia are brothers then descendants of each of them should match the DNA from my line. Anyone interested in the DNA project please let me know. Keep in mind that is will be several months until I get the results for our Henderson County, Kentucky Hust/Husk's. Also anyone interested in a scanned copy of my John and Valentine's wills please let me know and I will gladly share them.

Please e-mail directly for a copy of the wills or for info on the DNA project.

page 797, says that one of the first settlers in Uppertown precinct was Valentine Husk. (Precinct east of Owensboro.)And that he lived in Yellow Banks (now Owensboro) a few years, then moved to this part of the country, at a point on the Ohio River at the mouth of Pup Creek. He had a family of 8 children(records in the History of Daviess County show only 7. He came to Ky in 1796 from Virginia and died in 1826 or 1827. His wife was Elizabeth Hacker, daughter of William Hacker, who came to the county about the same time, and was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Hacker fought at Braddock's defeat, was personnally acquainted with George Washington, and he was a member of the Virginia Blues, Washington command.

Note by Mrs. Emma D. Mastins: I have a memorandum that Valentine Husk is buried on the Frank Duncan Farm in Daviess County, near the Old Camp Ground.

In 1780, the first white settlers came, via the Ohio River, to what is now Daviess County. Early settlers included Joseph Blackford and William Smeathers. Smeathers came in 1798 and built his cabin on a site near the river which is now St. Elizabeth Street in Owensboro. From this dwelling constructed by Smeathers, the first settlement began. The city was originally called "Yellow Banks" in reference to the color of the soil along the banks of the Ohio River and was selected as the county seat when the county was formed in 1815.

Daviess County, the 58th county to be formed in Kentucky, was named in honor of Colonel Joseph Hamilton Daveiss, a distinguished lawyer and soldier. In 1817, the city's name changed to Owensborough (later changed to Owensboro) in honor of Colonel Abraham Owen.

Daviess County was the 58th county formed in Kentucky, coming into existence on January 14, 1815 from portions of Ohio County. A portion of Daviess County was taken for the formation of Hancock County in 1829, and a small portion was taken for McLean County in 1854. These counties along with Henderson County, Kentucky and Warrick and Spencer Counties, Indiana form Daviess County's borders today.

The first settlers were William Smeathers/Smothers settled at Yellow Banks (now Owensboro) 1797/8 and Valentine Husk at about the same time. Well Gloria, looks like your link to me...not that many Valentine Husk's either, only father and son...I don't know any more since last time...just wish I could find out WHERE in Virginia they came to Yellowbanks [Owensboro] from.

My info from Owensboro, Daviess Co Ky says "The first settlers were WILLIAM SMEATHERS and VALENTINE HUSK who settled at Yellowbanks [now Owensboro] 1797/98 from Virginia...." Valentine Husk is also on the 1800 Ohio Co Ky Tax List along with my Wm Smethers. In a book I have called "Law of the Heart" by Dorothy Gentry, Valentine "Felty" and Wm are living right next to each other. You've heard of the 1809 incident at Smeathers cabin? A riverboatman and some pals pulled up to Smeathers Cabin which was on a bluff right at the end of the Ohio River, and it was also a tavern and gambling place...they were inside for awhile, got rowdy and Bill asked them to leave. They all left but one name Andrew Norris. Bill's sister Molly was living with him at the time and Norris is said to have after being told by Bill to go to Felty's so she would not hear such trashy language, got way laid by Norris, raped and Bill killed the man. Bill went to trial for it in April of 1809, later was acquitted for it but advised to leave the county, which he did in late 1810 and went to Tx for a yr or so then returned. In the 1810 census of Ohio Co and 1820 Molly/Polly shows up with a child! hmmmmm...she calls him her 'nephew' and she never married. We find her in Spencer Co Ind in 1840 with this 30 yr old 'nephew' we believe was her son and he is listed as 'idiotic' on the census. We have her will of 1847 when she died and she gave Custody of this James Smeathers to her sister, Jane Smeathers Grass to take care of him. So he was quite mentally handicapped. We found him in 1850 with his aunt Jane Grass, her husband is dead by then and aft that we can not find James, so believe he died bef 1860. We find Jane in 1860 but no James.

Interesting, eh? We have the court files for the trial too so it was widely known I guess. We just happened upon it, by wondering who the heck this 'nephew' was in her will. We believe it her son by rape of this Norris.

William Smeathers/Smothers settled at Yellow Banks (now Owensboro) 1797/8; Valentine Husk about the same time. Picture of Felty's log home http://members.tripod.com/jwhusk/husk_family_home_page.htm

Here is what we know about Valentine. He showed up in Owensboro and is listed as one of the first settlers in a book written by someone in Owensboro, a Doctor. I called him once, but found that he knew very little about Valentine.

Next, the migration paths which emerged following the French and Indian War correlate with the migration of the Husks. If you are near a used book store, pick up a copy of a migration book in the US history section. Gives maps and roads. Interesting reading if you like to place yourself in the time you are researching.

The city of record for all of Virginia was Augusta. Valentine took the southern route through the Cumberland Gap. Other Husks migrated across the National Road into Monogahela Cty. W. Va. (then Va.), and Greene Cty. PA. in 1794, which was the same year that Kentucky became a State.

We now have a significant amount of research on the Husks of Morristown, NJ. The only other Valentine I have shows up in 1820 Census of PA, Wayne Cty, Rostrave Twp.

Since sons and daughters were often named after relatives, we would look for a Valentine who was a generation or more apart from both of the known Valentine's, probably in New Jersey. So far, no one has been found.

Ronald Husk of Oregon spent a lot of effort trying to find Valentine's origin. His work is lost right now because he died a few years back, but I hope to search for a relative that might have taken up his research. I have some of his stuff though, and others do too.

I am working on the PA. Husks and think I will find a link to Valentine as I progress. We have Husks in NJ in 1700-1793, and then four Husks emerging in PA in 1794. We just do not have the documented link yet, but I think it will come soon. Tks for responding, Kent Moore Dallas, Texas

Excerpt taken from the article "Life & Times of Wm Smeathers" written 1840-50 by Honorable Thomas McCreery, pub 1866 Owensboro Ky Monitor and republished 1979 in "Back Home in Kentucky" magazine, Owensboro,Ky. "Near Blackford William called upon Natty and Ely Beal. At the house of the latter he was agreeably surprised at finding his brother, James Smeathers laying seige to Beall's sister in law, Elizabeth Beall. In his circuit he also saw Barker and Killenbaroer, Holmark and Holinhead, Jones and Jordan, Glenn and James Gentry and on his return home he heard the axe of FELTY HUSK cutting logs to build his home near the present residence of Thomas H Pointer. Husk was a good looking, sensible man and Smeathers invited him to stay at his cabin until his own cabin was finished. Husk was a great Bible reader-having no other book so he read it repeatedly and having a good memory he was more familiar with its contents than many preachers. It was hard to determine with any certainit!

y the precise tenets of his faith, as he differed on essential points with every one with which he conversed. These differences involved him in endless controversies, which were maintained on his part, with the ability and a perfect temper. He was amicable and respected the feelings of others. He seemed well satisfied with his faith and maybe felt little interest in the matters of dispute. Smeathers and Husk, who were the opposite of each other in every respect, soon contracted a friendship which only closed with their lives. Husk, not withstanding his religious proclivities, lent a helping hand to Smeathers in carrying out his deviltries, and Smeathers, indifferent to all moral precepts, listened with attention whilst the other talked of Peter and of Paul."

Chapter 1 p 26-27 Chap 2-pg 13-Justice of the Peace of Nelson Co Ky has ridden to see Smeathers and he says to Smeathers--"Who is that coming there"? Smeathers replies, "Oh that is Peter Felty Paul Husk, psalmist and sweet-singer of Israel." Husk entered and was introduced to Squire Thompson, who pointed to the bottle he and Smeathers had been partaking, and invited Felty to help himself. Husk remarking that Paul recommended a little for the stomach's sake, poured out fully three scruples and drank it. And now, Smeathers, said Anthony Thompson, please go on with your story where you left off before Felty Husk arrived." [the year of these conversations prob around 1812 in Ohio Co Ky at the Yellowbanks, now Owensboro, Ky]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Valentine "Felty" Husk (son of James Hurst/Hust/Husk) was born about 1770 in Virginia.

He first married Nancy Moore April 30, 1789 in Greene County, TN security on the bond was Thomas Tadlock. The bond has Felty Husk. He married second probably in Kentucky Elizabeth Hacker. I am not sure when Nancy died but before 1800 as Valentine's son George was born October 31, 1800 in Kentucky and a biography for him lists his mother's father as William Hacker. Valentine shows up in records with all three spellings for last name Hurst/Hust/Husk. I will not go into all the children of Valentine Husk as many folks have a tree for him online. I would say any children born after 1800 are with his second wife.

Valentine's youngest brother married for the first time in 1802 Ohio County, Kentucky to Nancy Hocker/Hacker. I would say she is probably a daughter of William Hacker as well. Valentine is the first in our line with the name Valentine "Felty" as far as I know only him and his descendants have this name.

Except for his brother John who named a son Valentine "Felty" it is not a common name for

Hurst/Hust/Husk's. Valentine died in Daviess County, Kentucky 1826. There has been alot written about him and his decendants so I won't go into any of that except to say that his second father in law William Hacker was born in Stafford County, Va.

His parents were married there in the Overwharton Parish and him and his brother John's birth and the parents marriage are recorded there.

This is important to point out because the Hurst's from this parish and our Hurst are a perfect DNA match. How the DNA project works is it is at www.familytreedna.com the Hurst family DNA project. The last name of Hurst, Hust, Husk, Herst, Hurse etc can participate.

I have through my line talked with many people who went with the Husk and Hust spellings and they

all knew and were told by grandparents etc that the name was Hurst first and that in the family was pronounced more like Hust which lead to Husk and Hust. Anyway through my research I knew and wanted to prove what branch of Hurst's we came from.

I found a decendant of John Hurst/Hust/Husk who was still living in Henderson County, Kentucky. Thanks to the efforts of his wife Lena, Warren Hust provided the DNA sample for the test. We could trace Warren back to John with a clear paper trail so he was the best hope at proving what we already felt. Anyway the Y DNA is passed from father to son. So to be a part of the DNA project you must be a male with the last name of Hurst/Hust/Husk etc. We got the results back and our Hurst/Hust/Husk from Henderson County, Kentcuky were an exact match to the Hurst's of Stafford County and Shenandoah Counties Virginia. So to sum it up I don't know who James's parents were at least I can't prove it but I do

know that he is related to the Hurst's in the same parish as William Hacker. So Valentine Husk's dad James would have known William Hacker and the families known eachother.

Notes for JOHN HUSK:

John Hurst/Hust/Husk (son of James and unknown) was born about 1765 in Virginia.

John was married first to Mary last name unknown. He is not with the family in Greene County, TN but believe the John Husk in the tax list of Sumner County, TN 1791, 1793 and 1794 is him. The family is in Warren County, TN in 1794 there was no Warren County, TN it was part of Sumner County.

I am not sure where John was first married. John is in Henderson County, Kentucky by 1807 as he shows up in the tax lists and his daughter Mary married William Strain there in 1807. John is in the census 1810 Henderson County, Kentucky as John Husk (indexed as Hush) next door is his son in law William Strain.

John's first wife died before 1817 and he marries a second time to Nancy Junell. I have several heirs list of her father Andrew Junell listing her as wife to John Hust and her children with him Absalom, Valentine "Felty", and George. John leaves Henderson County, Kentucky and moves to Warren County, TN where his father and several of his brothers are.

I have several deeds from Warren County, TN between 1815 and 1820 with James, Isaac, Absalom, and John. One is of James Hurst of Warren County, TN selling a slave to John Hurst of Henderson County, Kentucky in 1818.

Later that year there is one with John Hust selling back the same slave to James Hust now both of Warren County, TN.

John's daughter Catherine born about 1810 in Henderson County, KY married John Hibdon Jr. of Warren County, TN and the couple lived there and by 1850 moved back to Henderson County, Kentucky.

John's second wife died before him as she is not mentioned in his will. In the 1840 census he is living with his son William in Henderson County, Kentucky. John died 1841 in Henderson County, Kentucky.

Timeline for John: born Virginia about 1765, 1791-1795 Sumner County, TN, 1795 to ? TN, 1805 to 1818 in Henderson County, Kentucky, 1818 to 1829 Warren County, TN, 1830 Sumner County, TN, 1835 to 1841 Henderson County, Kentucky.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From second marriage he had three sons

1. Absolum Husk

2. Valentine "Felty" Husk

3. George Husk

John but his mark on there so he may not have been able to read or write.

Please e-mail directly for a copy of the wills or for info on the DNA project.

living alone. This would explain why her dad John mentions her as Elizabeth Penrod in his will and doesn't mention her husband.

In an article published 1890 someone who know William Hurst/Hust/Husk. This is from Pioneers of Trigg County, Kentucky by Cyrus Thompson Chapter 4 Husk, Adams and McCain Families;

"William Husk his family acquaintances without intended disrespect frequently referred to him as Old Billy Shuck. He was one of the earliest settlers of that section and when it was Christian County, coming, as I believe from Virginia. He was without education but was a good man plain in dress. Two sons that I remember Isaac and Lewis."

The Husk farm was settled by Sevier Tadlock. This was long before the first cabin was erected within a mile of the town of Cadiz. William Husk afterward bought this tract of land and can be classed with the early settlers. The history of trigg County, Kentucy.

Detroit on the 26th. She was required to be on-campus some 145 miles from home to practice for the event. We did not want her spending Christmas alone so we stayed in a couple adjoining rooms at the Comfort Inn in Mount Pleasant on the 24th, 25th, and 26th. The photo (unflattering according to my daughters) was taken in our hotel room with us standing in the one foot space between the bed and the wall. The town was dead and we enjoyed a Chinese dinner on Christmas. We drove back in time on the 26th to head downtown to watch CMU win their first bowl game.

May the peaceful beauty of Christmas remain throughout the year. Wishing you a memorable Christmas with family and friends filled with happiness that never ends.

May God Bless you and yours.

John, Laura, Christine, Catherine, and Colleen Husk

Know what you mean about family not being interested. I have 4 siblings and while they enjoy what I find and share on our family they all have no desire to sit and look at film, walk thru cemeteries, read books and all the other exciting things I do. Said they don't have the patience. So be it.

There are some quarters that question Rosa Jane Husk being the wife of James H. Richmond. She has not appeared in a census with George and Charlotte. She first appeared in the 1850 census as the 20 year old wife of James Richmond age 24 and Charlotte a female child 1/2 years. Rosa Jane I estimate as born in 1830. Her sister, Paulina Husk born in 1845 married Joseph Likins in about 1861. While Rosa's daughter Charlotte married Joseph's brother Silvester. (it all still confuses me)

My husband's family - Garrett, Likins, Richmond, Husk - in the direct line. There are 3 children from Vivian's half sisters.

Cordie Likins Garrett Willingham had 2 children - Mabel and Arthur - survive to adulthood.

Arthur had one son, Morris.

Morris lives in Boonville, Indiana. He and his wife Sue had some information which they shared but their health is failing and I don't hear from them much.

Anyway.......

Bill and I live in Kansas City, Missouri. I have done my research at the Mid-continent Library in Independence, Missouri and I can't get there as frequently as I used to. I work 3 days and am also a caregiver to my 96 year old father. All of which keeps me busy.

We were invited to a reunion on September 25 in Henderson, Kentucky. Should we make it I was told I would get a personal guided tour of the cemeteries and the courthouse record room. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Notes for FLORENCE MABEL GARRETT:

Subject: Re: Valentine & Elizabeth

Here is the correct info:

June 14, 1913 - Jesse Beard, age 19, son of S. Beard and Mary Beard married Florence M. Garrett, age 16, daughter of R. Garrett and H. Garrett. Married at home of bride and Father of bride present gives consent. Henderson, Kentucky.

Note: The app/license has Cordie's (Mabel's mother) listed as H. We have no idea where the "H" came from.

July 16, 1920 - Newton Benjamin Goad of unreadable town, Mississippi married Florence Mabel Garrett of Henderson, Kentucky in Atlanta, Georgia

Note: Newton Benjamin Goad also used N.B. Goad or just Ben Goad.

Henderson Circuit Court, January Term 1924: The 1920 marriage of Goad and Garrett was declared null and void because Florence Mabel Goad was "at the time of the performance of the marriage ceremony between her and the plaintiff, Newton Benjamin Goad, the wife of another man and from who she had never been divorced"

I have found no date for the marriage to Charles Wilder. Charles Wilder was listed as father when he signed as a witness to the 1932 marriage of Vivian to Fred Prenzel. Mabel was found in the 1930 Evansville Census as a resident in a home using the name of Wilder. Mabel's death certificate has her listed as "Wilder".

So..... the correct order is 1st, Jesse Beard. 2nd Newton Benjamin Goad. 3rd Charles Wilder.
